Justin Barker in Court
December 4, 2006
marker on paper, 5" x 7"

Justin Barker stands at a preliminary hearing on battery and resisting arrest charges for interfering with a Fox affiliate's broadcast on Halloween. During KTVU's coverage of Halloween, Barker jumped in front of the camera and said "Fox News is bullsh*t, Fox News sucks" before the camera turned away. The video (which KTVU has pulled from YouTube) shows that Barker did not touch reporter Amber Lee, so the charge of battery is rather ridiculous. Apparently, the police see it as their job to protect the quality of TV news broadcasts. It's all very strange and the blogosphere is abuzz at sfbg.com, DemocraticUnderground.com, and sfist.com.

This is the drawing of the week for December 3-10, 2006.

Justin Barker in Court
January 29, 2007
marker and pencil on paper, 5" x 5"

Justin Barker was in court with his public defender for what was to be the jury selection day for his trial. On Halloween, he had jumped behind KTVU reporter Amber Lee to shout criticisms of Fox News on air with the local Fox affiliate, as reported in the Bay Guardian and as documented by Justin. Lee is claiming he grabbed her and shoved her to the ground, so Barker is being charged with battery. On this day in court, the prosecutor found out that an impartial eyewitness, who had watched the whole incident from a balcony, is ready to testify that Barker did not touch the reporter. The prosecutor then requested and received a one week's continuance.

This is the drawing of the week for January 28 - February 3, 2007.

Jury Duty
June 30, 2005
marker on paper, 4" x 6"

They put all of us potential jurors in a large waiting room with a video playing to promote the benefits of the jury duty experience. Several hundred fellow citizens twisted themselves to watch while I listened to the game.

I did pay attention when a friendly clerk addressed the crowd. She put all at ease by mocking the whole system. "...When you're trying to read that [juror] questionaire, it's like reading a bilbe - it just doesn't make sense." Then she read the names of people whose service would not be needed. I was on that list. My duty lasted less than an hour.
