April 1, 2008
marker on paper, 5" x 7"

Otis, a swanky bar near San Francisco's Union Square, was packed for Sri Lankan artist Kumara Rathnayaka's paintings in a show organized by Maria Larsson of Patrea Lifestyle Products. Black continues to be fashionable.

KeepSweet Plays City Sessions at Waziema
January 9, 2008
marker on paper, 9" x 12"

The blues duo KeepSweet played their special brand of dirty blues as the opening act of City Sessions at Club Waziema.

Waziema, with it's excellent Ethiopian food, comfortable bar, and velvet wallpaper, has been a favorite destination of mine for years. I've always loved being in the back room where James Brown, Tina Turner, Billie Holliday and other legends performed in the '70's, but this was the first time that I've seen live music there myself.

Preparing for happy hour at the Latin American Club. I enjoy sitting on the stage at this festive bar which is not particularly Latin or clubby.

The Trophies of Toronado
December 19, 2007
marker on paper, 5" x 7" (sold)

Toronado Pub is known for their large, high-quality selection of draught beer. A friend asked the bartender which beer was a good one - the bartender responded, "psh... all of them."

The walls of the bar are covered with draft handles displayed on wooden racks, like hunting trophies. It's an impressive display to look at while eating a smoked lamb sausage from Rosamunde Sausage Grill next door washed down with a dark Santa's Tipple.

This is the drawing of the week for December 16-22, 2007.

View of Make-Out Room from the Revolution Cafe
December 16, 2007
pen on postcard, 4" x 4'

Picked up a few presents on Valencia Street then got a beer and sat out front at the Revolution Cafe with a view of the Make-Out Room. One time, I was at the Make-Out Room and a couple came in and sat at one of the booths near the door, by the bar. They sat there and necked for half-an-hour, then left.

marker on paper, 9" x 12"

Out with friends on a Tuesday night again. This time we went back to the Pilsner Inn. The porch is lovely even if it really was a bit cold for that.

This is the drawing of the week for December 9-15, 2007.

The Clydes Belt Their Songs at the Blarney Stone
September 13, 2007
marker and pencil on paper, 9" x 12"

Dan and Shavi, having broken off from the Elegant Clydes, play their first show as a duo with all original songs at the Blarney Stone, a proper Irish Pub in the Richmond. I was a benefit for the film "Death by Corporation" based on the real human rights abuses of Chevron, the most profitable company ever.

This is the drawing of the week for September 9-15, 2007.

Il Pirata's Friendly Barkeep
September 11, 2007
marker on paper, 4" x 6"

Some regulars bantered loudly at one end of the bar, occasionally watching a rare Giants win on TV, while the bartender (Billy, I think) kept the beer flowing and the mood friendly on a Tuesday night when only Maria and I showed up.

At Il Pirata.
