Gandiji on the Beach
December 31, 2004
watercolor and marker on paper, 4" x 6"

This is a drawing I did on my trip to India, 11 months ago, of a Gandhi statue on the beach of Chennai. This is in one of the areas devestated by the recent tsunami. There was a scaffolding around him as it was the day after the 56th anniversary of his death. To mark the day, people climbed the scaffolding and placed wreaths over his head.

WWGD?

One excellent group that you can count on to use the money in the best way possible is Doctors Without Borders. This is one of the organizations Raja always recommends (Raja is now on the board of the Health Justice Collaborative).

Postcards From India
February 19, 2004
title page for a series

Lauren and I travelled through India for three weeks. With watercolors and markers, I drew the scenery on postcards, which we used to send tales of our travels to friends. I photoed each card before sending it, and most are posted here for your enjoyment.

The most recent artwork always comes first on this site. If you click 'next page' and scroll down, you'll find 'Singapore Layover', the first picture in this series.

Other drawings from India are posted in the topics 'Given as Gifts in India' and 'Indian Artists'.

...in the Southern state of Kerala. We rode a boat through endless green and blue, eating the freshest meals prepared, with love and care, on the very boat we travelled... I never imagined that India would be so outstandingly, tear-jerkingly beautiful.

marker on paper, 4" x 6"

Dear Mom + Dad Berman -
This is a picture of a Kathakali actor at a show in Kochi on the west coast. The show is full of elaborate dress and make up and lots of subtle sign-language gestures that were totally lost on us...

No Form Filling
February 5, 2004
collaboration, collage on paper, 4" x 6"

Created with Lauren Girardin, Wendy-style.

Dearest Wendies,
Trivandrum is a college town less attractive than the rest of the State of Kerala, and less attractive than Shah Rukh (movie star) so we only dallied a day then went north to beautiful, beachy, millionaire-for-a-day Varkala where...
