On the first Friday of each month, the Artist Xchange has an opening to show off the works of many great artists. They are also open well into the evening seven days a week.

At small backyard soiree to support Center for Outdoor Contemporary Art (COCA), Elliot Lessing mixes a cherry cocktail.

Lessing is one of the chief architects of this new arts organization. COCA will bring new art to San Francisco's parks October 19-21, 2007 with the Open Skies project.

Southern Exposure put together an all star panel of public artists for their "How Do I Make My Art Public Art?" workshop held at the Mission Cultural Center.

Aimee Le Duc, associate director of SOEX, moderated a panel consisting of Rigo, Seyed Alavi, the Living Lenses team of Po Shuwang and Louise Bertelsen, and Packard Jennings. The artists talked about their work - and they all do some fantastic work, really, click on their names and check it out - and then had a lively conversation with the audience.

They agreed that you've got to do public art that fits your own budget before you can get grants to fund larger projects. I commented on how the grant system has them everyone in the room spending a lot of time to compete with each other for the same small pot of money and asked if any of them had seen better models. Jennings said he likes the Christo model - to fund projects by selling off sketches and pieces of the project - but acknowledged that it's tough to pull that off without the celebrity factor.

We were greeted by Tatiana Lyskova (on the right), founder and CEO of MesArt, an international artists community. The Foundation Center is a truly terrific resource, so I was very interested to go to a workshop there about the San Francisco Foundation's new Fund for the Artists. Unfortunately, after Jaime Cortez told us that visual art would be handled through Artadia, there wasn't much more to be said. Still, Cortez's enthusiasm for helping artists make a living is genuine and I appreciate that.
