Collectively Inspired View of the 7th Annual Monster Drawing Rally
February 23, 2007
marker and pencil on paper, 8" x 10" (donated)

I was a drawer at Southern Exposure's 7th Annual Monster Drawing Rally. This is a view from the drawing table created using ideas suggested by the jam-packed crowd of on-lookers.

I put out a piece of paper asking for words to describe the event replies included: "Beer Breath," "Stuffed," "Energized," "Sex (so it will sell)," and "Great People Watching" - and things that need to be included in a drawing of the monster rally. Some ideas people wrote were: "Unicorns," "Monsters!," "Monster sitting on a toad stool," "Lobster," "Space," and "An Elephant Drawing," all of which I kept adding to the drawing until I realized that it was 9 O'clock and my turn was up. John Casey's drawing hand also appears in this drawing (he's not the elephant).

This is the drawing of the week for February 18-24, 2007.

Sellling to the Crowd at the Monster Drawing Rally
February 23, 2007
marker on paper, 4" x 6"

At Southern Exposure's 7th Annual Monster Drawing Rally at the Verdi Club, completed drawings were hung on the wall and sold for $50 each. Sometimes, many in the packed crowd wanted to buy the same drawing, so they each picked a card - highest card gets to purchase the art.

"Please - Help with ideas" for drawing of a monster drawing rally
February 23, 2007
photograph of idea survey

I was a drawer at the 7th Annual Monster Drawing Rally, a fund-raiser for Southern Exposure. There was a large crowd of people there to watch, but I didn't think they should be left out of the fun. I put this paper out so that people could tell me what to include in my drawing.

All Star Public Art Panel
January 24, 2007
marker and pencil on paper, 9" x 12"

Southern Exposure put together an all star panel of public artists for their "How Do I Make My Art Public Art?" workshop held at the Mission Cultural Center.

Aimee Le Duc, associate director of SOEX, moderated a panel consisting of Rigo, Seyed Alavi, the Living Lenses team of Po Shuwang and Louise Bertelsen, and Packard Jennings. The artists talked about their work - and they all do some fantastic work, really, click on their names and check it out - and then had a lively conversation with the audience.

They agreed that you've got to do public art that fits your own budget before you can get grants to fund larger projects. I commented on how the grant system has them everyone in the room spending a lot of time to compete with each other for the same small pot of money and asked if any of them had seen better models. Jennings said he likes the Christo model - to fund projects by selling off sketches and pieces of the project - but acknowledged that it's tough to pull that off without the celebrity factor.

This is the drawing of the week for January 21-27, 2007.

Swinging to an Alternative Soundtrack Tour
January 6, 2007
marker on paper, 4" x 6"

Southern Exposure hosted "Out of Bounds," an Alternative Soundtrack City Tour with NPR's (Neighborhood Public Radio) Lee Montgomery. We listened in to 88.9 fm and followed directions around the perimeter of NPR's very small broadcasting radius. We stopped in this small park to hear an interview with a local pedestrian-safety activist.

Ledi Carroll Talks About the Lake Project
October 14, 2006
marker on paper, 5" x 7"

Ledi Carroll talks about the Mission Lake Project at Southern Exposure's new Mission Street location. Carroll drew a blue line around the area where the Mission Lake once stood. Her artist talk only lasted a few minutes - I wish she had more to say.

Chris Sollars and His Giant Trash Bag
January 13, 2006
marker on paper, 4" x 6"

Chris Sollars talks about his Accumulative Dissipation exhibit at Southern Exposure gallery. Behind him is a giant trashbag inside which served as a small movie theater. While Sollars' video of people dressed as trash bags walking around San Francisco made us think about the role of trash in society, the whole project lacked depth. Were the video recontextualized as part of a hidden camera television show, we would change the channel.

Had Sollars put some dancers in the bags, the project could have involved a more visceral artistic expression and may have attracted more attention from passerby's. Instead, the creative process ended with the planning stage and pedestrians on Market Street were only briefly amused.

Mayhem at SOEX
November 4, 2005
marker on paper, 8" x 6"

I love to enter Southern Exposure's annual juried competition. There's no fee, no artist statements, no hassle - just drop off a painting and hope for a phone call. I didn't get that phone call this year for the "Mayhem" show, but I did go check out the opening. There's a photo from a similar view on the nstraghalis Flicker site.
