marker on paper, 8" x 6"

Students in the Galileo Academy of Information Technology held a screening of the short documentaries they made as part of the Adobe Youth Voices program. The films, which dealt with such topics as a high school wrestler coming out of the closet, growing up in 'pill hill' in the Tenderloin, betrayals of friendship, immigrating to the United States, and others were all interesting, honest, and well-crafted.

This is the drawing of the week for May 18-24, 2008.

Impressions of the Tenderloin
May 14, 2008
collaborative, mixed media on paper, 24" x 30"

with painting by Melody L., Kaiulani W., stencils by Micco F., photography by Ben Chun, and writing and drawings by other students.

This painting is part of a group artistic exploration of San Francisco that I have been working on at Galileo Academy. Students ideas about the Tenderloin Neighborhood and parts of SOMA are collaged together into this cityscape.

One student wrote, as part of an affiliated 'zine project, "i have no problem walking through sixth street. i always walk by and no on gives me trouble. i know a few people from sixth street and its not that bad. and all this stuff about TL being violent is untrue. if you don't mess with people, they don't mess with you. the beefing stuff with TL and sixth street don't even matter cuz its not like they stop you and ask you where your from."

"Art in the Library?" article in the pendulum
February 28, 2008
image of press coverage

Article by Lee E. as seen in the February 2008 edition of The Pendulum (the newspaper of record for Galileo Academy). "This year, the Galileo library has been transformed by Mr. Berman from simply a library into an art gallery library collaboration to help students spark their creativity. Students can go to the library and work on their art or examine others' art. Moreover, there are many other activities that have taken place or are being planned outside of artwork.
"Mr. Berman, the long term sub for Galileo librarian, Mr. Delaney, who is on sabbatical, first decided to have art in the library because he wanted to promote creativity. 'The point of art in general is to promote and inspire creativity. We could use a lot more creativity to deal with the problems in the world.' He wants to help students prepare for life outside of school and open up their minds to new and different opinions. Artists can also come to get help from fellow artists and discuss their works.
"There have already been many events held in the library. In December there was an art show where students and faculty showed off their art, talent and skills. Also, there was recently a display of Miss Moffett's class on the book Dante's inferno called "Moffett's Inferno." Also, there is currently an interesting art gallery on display. "We are currently exploring the theme of San Francisco through art," said Mr. Berman. Essentially it is an exploration of San Francisco through Greek mythology and art. Mr. Berman encourages anyone to stop by and check out whatever art is on display in the library at that time. Also, many teachers offer extra credit for those who contribute art to the art galleries connection.
"In addition, each day of the week, the library has a different theme; Mondays are silent lunches, Wednesdays are art days (where everyone is asked to make a piece of art), and Fridays are open mic days for students with any ideas or opinions. Furthermore, Mr. Berman is planning to have musicians come in and play in the library during lunch.
"Galileo's library is no longer just a library - it's also an art gallery. For anyone that is interested in learning more about upcoming events or discussing ideas that they have, you can either visit Mr. Berman in the library or visit the library blog at the Galileo website, where there are constant updates on the activities occurring in the library."
