Photograph by Lauren Girardin - see more photos of this event.

Michael adds his name to the list at the Pierre Valley Neighborhood Art Project.

The Creativity God is Pleased
February 1, 2008
photograph of art activity

photograph by Darrin and Teakeysha

The god of Creativity (created by Todd Berman) is pleased as it watches Mr. Holmes' class create a new pantheon of deities to preside over San Francisco. Just as Homer wrote about Greek gods to promote certain values to his fellow Grecians, Mr. Holmes' students are creating a set of gods to help San Franciscans navigate the dangers of the modern world.

This is the "drawing" of the week for January 17 to February 5, 2008.

Creating a collective self-portrait at FlashDance 5
November 18, 2006
photograph of a creative experience

At 6:55 on Saturday, November 18, 2006, the cable car turnaround plaza at Powell and Market Street had the usual mix of tourists, shoppers, and locals passing through. At 7:05, there was a raging dance party.

It was a FlashDance (a "flash mob" dance party). Nearly a hundred people were there and ready to dance at seven - having found out about the event through email. Many more people got lucky and joined in the fun.

This was a perfect event to bring a little more art to. I set up my new camping table and invited dancers to draw self-portraits. I will collage these drawings together into a painting on canvas to create a collective self-portrait of the event.

drawing together in class
October 16, 2006
photograph of a creative experience

Students at Galileo High School add to each others drawings in a collaborative conversation. I have asked them to follow their instincts as the write and draw to add to small pieces of art in collaboration with a wide range of my friends, strangers, and other students. It's nice to be able to bring some absurd art into the classroom when I am working as a substitute teacher.

Joshua and Mabel draw their impressions of CELLspace
October 14, 2006
photograph of a creative experience

I brought some markers and sketchbooks to CELLspace's 10th anniversary party. It seemed only right, at a party celebrating this arts collective, to try and engage people in some creativity.

Joshua Short and Mable Negrete, who are both very inventive collaborative artists - I mean really, check out their websites and see all the cool projects they've done, graciously spent some time drawing their impressions of CELLspace.

I've got a neat stack of very varied visual responses which I will be incorporating into one painting on canvas of "Our CELLspace."

imagining a future 6th Street
July 20, 2006
photo of an art experience

On the sidewalk at 6th and Minna Streets, people draw and write ideas about what they'd like to see on 6th Street as part of a project to generate creative thought about development in the neighborhood. These ideas and drawings will be used to create a painting of a fantasy 6th Street (similar to A More Green Market Street).

Drawing at Family MAPP
April 22, 2006
photograph of a collaborative drawing experience

Some local kids at the family MAPP contribute to the collaborative drawings I bring all over the place. This was just one of the art activities available on that sunny Saturday outside the Red Poppy Art House. These kids chose to draw on some pictures of Bush, which is always popular.

students and the Reflections on El Norte
March 6, 2006
photograph of collaborative project

Students in Ms. Foley's class look at the collaborative painting and find the elements they contributed. Members of these Spanish classes were asked to draw whatever the movie inspired them to draw. They had the experience of working independently and creatively while still being able to contribute to a common group project.

creating The Apartments
March 4, 2006
photograph of a creative experience

Audience members (Mattthew, Vanessa and Lauren) for the play, The Apartment, draw views into their apartment windows to be included in the painting, The Apartments. This got them thinking about their own experience with personal space when living in a crowded city before seeing a play that deftly explored that very topic.
